Home Reading Logs

Students created their home reading logs 2 weeks ago (a red duotang). They should be reading for 20 minutes every night. Once they have read for 20 minutes they are to get a signature from a guardian on their reading log game board. There are 3 special spots on the gameboard. Once they have read to each special spot (dotted lines), they can bring their reading log to school to get a reward. Once they have completed their entire gameboard, they can bring their reading log into school to receive a special reward. They will then get a new gameboard for their reading log.

How to Help at Home

I have included some questions (in their reading log duotang) that you might want to ask your child once they have read each night. There are also a variety of questions you could ask your child on the “How to Help at Home” newsletter sent home during Meet the Teacher night (or sent home with your child the next day if you were unable to make it to Meet the Teacher night). Talking to your child each night about what they have read helps them build on their reading comprehension skills. Please encourage your child to read each night and sign their duotang. If your child needs a new book to read at home, please let me know and they can sign one out from our school library.

Math Unit: Operations and Problem Solving

In math, students are currently working on a unit involving the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). We will also be focusing on problem solving questions from real life scenarios.

How to Help at Home

Many students are still struggling with their multiplication facts. This is something that students can be doing some extra practice on at home, by either using flash cards, worksheets, or playing multiplication games online.

When shopping, have your child help you figure out how much multiple items will cost using estimation.

Assessment Folders

Students will be bringing home their assessment folders tonight. If you could please look over your child’s work with them and sign beside each piece of work. Please send the folder and all work back to school as soon as possible. If you have any questions or comments, please record them in the question/comment section of the assessment folder.
